The Power of Love

Random thoughts transformed into a Friday Flash 55.

Black and white
Shades of gray
A dawn's delight
A fading day
The moon, the sun
The stars above
A moment begun
The power of love

Hot and cold
Another way
Still the same
We must obey
Endless hours
Morning's dove
Here forever
The power of love

Day Into Night

Day into night
Night into day
Watching each one
Fade away

Wrong versus right
Love's evil twin
Where there is hate
Nobody wins

Day into night
Night into day
Watching each one
Fade away

Fire and ice
Cleanses all
Deny ye now
The devil's call

Lightly Falling Snow

White Christmas 2010

Lightly falling snow
Dusts the ground like
Powdered sugar doughnuts
Leaving sweet traces
On little faces
Wrapped up in pretty colors
Bright blue mittens
And shiny red boots
Children's happy cries
And their mother's sighs
Remembering the days long ago
Of lightly falling snow

This was our White Christmas.  It began snowing at 11:15 Christmas morning.
We had 6 inches on the ground the morning after Christmas.  What a beautiful Christmas present.

A Winter's Day

Snow covered pines bend low
Softly whispering their secrets
The icy carpet beneath
Bears the tracks of birds and squirrels
Scurrying frantically hither and yon
Seeking sustenance and shelter
Against the bitter cold
Hunkering down until the sun
Shall warm away winter's evidence
And return to them nature's bounty
That they may feast once more

Turkey Day Review

For Thanksgiving dinner we would wait
Then we sat and ate and ate
Thankful we are to be gathered here
At this joyous time of year
Said Uncle Fred

Would you please pass the bread
When all was done
Someone said how about one
More piece of pumpkin pie
No thanks, I think I'd die

A New Season

Around us leaves begin to fall
Paying heed to winter's call
Shades of gold and red and green
Play their parts in nature's scene.

Another season draws to a close
Captured elegantly in poem or prose
And puts a smile upon our face
As each new season we embrace

It's a Cat's Life

Cats in sprawling repose
Or curled up nose to nose
Sleeping the day away
Dreaming of a day at play
Rolling, blinking, unseeing eyes
A whimper and a heavy sigh
A big stretch, blink and stare
Stretch again and rise with flair
Wander out for a snack
Then slowly wander back
To start over again

Shades of Summer

Although it is the first day of Autumn, and Summer has officially drawn to a close, we are still feeling the heat from another 90-degree day.  It seems Autumn is just another word in our neck of the woods today.

Basking in the summer sun
Watching butterflies one by one
Flitting here and alighting there
Of my presence unaware

Beneath the yellow poplar tree
Here I sit, myself and me
The sky above is clear and blue
Nary a trace of morning dew

Though the sun bears summer’s heat
With pavement hot upon my feet
The dappled shade brings signs of fall
Clearly heard in the crickets’ call

Morning Sky

Sunshine and raindrops
make prisms across the sky
Beautiful, fading, gone

The Lock and the Key

Said the lock to the key
Will you marry me
We'll live forever more
Here upon this weathered door
It's charming and quaint
With it's peeling paint

Said the key to the lock
It's the best on the block
It's sheltered in shade
So we'll have it made
You and me together
Forever

Through the Door

An old door with
Weathered wood and
Peeling paint
Aged and pitted
The lock
Cranky and stiff
Accepts the key and
Slowly opens
Beyond the walls
Lay hidden a garden
Long neglected and
Overgrown
But for a single
Yellow rose

A Storm in the Night

Slowly into the night
Silently advancing
Unknown and undetected
Trembling now, but
Unrelenting
Nearly within reach
And poised to strike
It's approach is like
A zephyr
Gently caressing
Suddenly without warning
Power without measure
Gloriously unleashed
Pounds down upon the land
Her terrifying fury
Splashes the earth, then
As quickly as it came
Retreats slowly into the night

This was poem written quite some time ago, but I thought it matched the fierceness of the sky in this picture.  That light colored cloud was moving very fast.

Nature's Ballet

Leaves
Dry and crinkled with age
Swirling down
to dance across the lawn
like tiny ballerinas

A Limerick Is Born!

It was late and I had called it a night shortly after midnight.  The lights were out, my DH was in the reading room and Rosie had settled down on my pillow.  As I lay there awaiting the sandman, a series of words kept going through my head.  They strung together with other words and started rhyming.  As they came together, I knew I had to get a pen and paper and write it down.  After Hubs read it, I remarked that it sounded something like a limerick.  He said "I think it is".

Now I've read limericks for years, but didn't know what made them "limericks", so I looked it up, and apparently I'd written one.

There once was a girl from Magoo
Who got stuck on a big spot of glue
She squirmed and she wiggled
'Til everyone giggled
And bid her get rid of the shoe

I Sing No More

My songs are scattered
From shore to distant shore
Here I stand - alone

My dreams are shattered
I am done - I sing no more
I have turned to stone

Renewed Inspiration

I was reading one of Sara's recent posts from a sharing connection, and  was inspired to share more of my own poetry.  Here is one I wrote on May 22, 1984.

New Dawn
Sun painted sky
Of brilliant orange
Bids a fond farewell
To still another day
Yet we know always
There is a new dawn
Breaking on some
Distant shore

A Dreary Weekend

It is already November - can you believe it? I'm telling you the older I get the faster time seems to fly.  Now the years are shorter, and the days (and nights) never seem to have enough hours in them.  Alas, there is no formula for slowing down time.  If there were, some one of us would be richer for it.  Still, there are days we may not want to slow down.

Anyway, I should get on with the point of this post.  I used to write poetry, or at least I dabbled at it from time to time.  Still do when the spirit moves me.  I wrote one a long time ago about a gray November day.  Now we rarely have snow here in November, but it can still put a chill in your bones.

November Gray

Cold and windy, bleak and gray
What more can you ask
Of a November day
Snow clouds and chickadees
Creep in and settle down
Ore the mountains and valleys alike
The last of the leaves
Crinkled with age
Are carelessly blown astray
Gentle flakes begin to fall
And blankets the earth in
Snowy white
To everyone, tall or small
It brings peals of laughter and delight
And adds some warmth to a
Dreary day dressed only in
November gray
