Winter Comfort Food

This is day two of the 20 Days of Chill writing challenge hosted by P. J. at A ‘lil HooHaa. Please join me as we share a month of reading, writing and discovery.  Today's topic is Favorite Winter Comfort Food.

Wow, who knew such a simple, straightforward topic would be so challenging?  There are a number of foods which fall into the category of "my favorites" and/or "comfort food", but they are not categorized by season. In fact, there are very few foods or dishes that I consider strictly seasonal.  It is not taboo for me to make soup in the summer or eat ice cream in the winter.

When I think of comfort food, I think of dishes like mac and cheese, a plate of potato hash, a burger, pizza or anything with bacon, none of which I would relegate to the winter months.

That which comes closest to fulfilling both the winter and comfort requirements would be pecan pie. I only make this around Christmas and it is my favorite pie. While it is obviously food, and I only make it in the winter, it seems odd to call it my favorite winter comfort food.

What are some of your favorite winter and/or comfort dishes?

  1. OK, let me try this again. I didn't see a notice or anything, so I'm not sure if my last comment went through ... (if it did, feel free to whack one of them!)

Anyway, I would agree about the mac and cheese not necessarily being a "winter" comfort food. But there's something to be said about a nice dish of homemade mac and cheese on a cold winter night that sounds simply awesome!

    1. Sometimes comments get lost in cyberspace.

Mac and Cheese is pretty awesome, especially with spicy green chiles added to the cheese sauce. Yum!

  3. I love a good piece of Pecan pie. We lucked out this Thanksgiving when my sister asked us to bring a pecan pie, which was then not cut into during the entire day. Got to take it home and enjoy it for several days after that. Yummy.

    1. You got lucky...a whole pie for yourselves. We had one all to ourselves this year, too. So yummy! They just don't last long enough.

  4. Do you know that we didn't have pecan pie this Thanksgiving? OH NO! I didn't even think about it but now I realize I miss it! I can't make it this weekend with two birthday cakes to bake... but maybe next weekend!

  5. I'll add my vote for pecan pie and include homemade fruitcake (call me weird).

    1. My Mom made fruitcake, but I never warmed up to it. Her pecan pie recipe, however, was awesome and is the only one I use.

  6. Pecan pie isn't bad so long as it isn't overly sweet. It seems like a lot of store-bought pecan pies have this problem. My friend made a subtly sweet pecan pie over this recent holiday, and it was fantastic. Great choice, Linda.

  7. Pecan pie is my favorite pie, as well. But I've never actually made it from scratch. I don't think JC has ever made it from scratch and he's a chef:~) However, I have to be careful because I could literally eat the whole pie:~)

    1. Sorry this went into moderation. Anyway, I am surprised that if you like it so much and he's a chef, why he hasn't made it for you. There is a danger in having a whole pie. We just eat a slice each after dinner until it's gone and that's all til next year. I can share my recipe if you like.
