Chickadee at Lunch

Like many of you, I love all the little critters of the world, and there is a special place in my heart for the Chickadee.  I spied this little guy having lunch at a very interesting feeder.  It is a piece of real wood with suet inserted into it.

My Mom used to feed the Chickadees, and they got so used to it they would gather in the tree and call for their lunch.

  1. I didn't know there was an actual bird called a Chickadee. I always thought it was just a term W.C. Fields invented. What do you know!

  2. I think that's the first time I've ever seen a Chickadee. Cool!

  3. I love chickadees, too. I had an aunt who fed them all the time and we could stand outside with arms and hands outstretched and the chickadees would land and take seed off our palms. It was a cool thing that I always remember and as a child I wished she lived closer to us :)

    Awesome video, Linda.

  5. In posting this and reading the comments it made me wonder where the chickadees call home. I found that there are two different species. The one around here is called, surprise of surprises, the Carolina Chickadee. It's territory is the Southern to Southwestern US, excluding southern Florida. The second is the Black-capped Chickadee. They are found in most of the rest of the US and parts of Canada, excluding the most southern/western part of the US.

Jayne, according to the map, I don't think there are any in CA., but their habitat line is the border of CA and Oregon.

Nicky- There are black caps in Canada, but I can't tell from the map if they are in your area.

Talon- Thank you. I wish I had the experience of feeding them by hand. It is cool to watch them crack the sunflower seeds.

Meleah- You should have black caps in your area. Maybe now you will see some. Sometimes it works that way. You hear of something, and then lo and behold there it is. I hope you do - they are so sweet. They love sunflower seeds if you want to try and attract some.

  6. I have lots of Chickadees at my feeder. I love to watch them. They usually are in pairs and talk a lot. Right now the Northern visitors are here (golden finches) and they're rather pushy, but chickadees are FAST.

Thanks for sharing the information and the picture. That IS a cool feeder:~)

Hope all is well with you.

  7. Sara, being in the northern part of the state, you get to enjoy these lovely creatures. According to the map I was looking at, the lower part of the state doesn't have any. :(

We have goldfinches too, but since I don't have feeders, we don't see many. That is a great feeder. I took this video at Hubby's brother's place.

  8. I love the little rascals too. They have personality all out of proportion to their size.

  9. Frank - Indeed they have all sorts of personality going on. Mom fed them year round.
