It's Only A Dream

It is day 22 of the Third Second Annual 30 Minus 2 Days of Writing challenge hosted by Nicky and Mike at We Work for Cheese and today's prompt is It's only a dream.  Head on over to WWFC for a peek into some more dreams.

Fear rises, heart pounds
Silent scream, frozen in place
Eyes open, relieved

How often have you had a scary dream and were able to wake yourself up?  It seems when I'm having a dream that I know is going to end badly for me, I manage to wake up before anything happens.  Sometimes it me waking up just in time, but other times it is actually me telling myself that this is not real...it's only a dream.

  1. I often wonder what would happen if I didn't wake myself up in those instances.

  2. Yes, thank goodness I can wake myself up. Our minds work in mysterious way, don't they?

  3. I get a lot of dreams where I can't tell if they are real or not. Scary...when I wake up with leftover Ambien in me - takes a while to come to your normal senses. Not fun sometimes.

Years ago I went through several months where each dream started exactly the same -- as I fell asleep in my bed, I awoke in a building's stairwell. I'd then get up, walk up or down a flight or so and open the door, and then the dream would be different from that point on.

  5. I've done that. I don't know how I manage to figure out at times that I'm in a dream, but if I want to get out of it, after a couple of tries, it usually works. Why IS that?

  6. I have had some very vivid dreams that I would feel powerless to control. I don't think I realized it was a dream either. Weird stuff happens in our sleep!

  7. The scariest thing for me is when you have a dream so scary you try and scream and nothing comes out... SO SO SO SCARY!!!

  8. nonamedufus- You would be just fine. I actually read up on that while writing the post.

    ReformingGeek- They certainly do.

Mariann- I guess sleeping medications would kinda mess with your head.

Frank- That's odd. Sometimes within a dream, I think this is a repeat, meaning that the dream is something I have done, seen, or been there before and I am reliving it.

Margaret- I don't know. I do know that I am very relieved to wake up. These are usually dreams involving an attacker or some other dangerous situation. Not so with accidents, crashes, etc. Those the dreams fade away or even stop abruptly without my trying to wake myself up.

Linda- More often when I was younger, I would have dreams about being held captive and never being allowed to see my family or friends again, or someone was after me.

Katherine- Oh yeah, the silent scream. I don't know if they would happen in real life. I have a pretty good scream.

  10. Meleah- Oh, me too. Downside is that I always wake up too soon from a fun dream.
