Welcome to Autumn

From our house to yours - have a great weekend!

Today is the first day of Autumn 2012.  Unlike Septembers of recent years, there is a crispness to the mornings, and the daytime temperatures are more in keeping with the changing seasons.  Many years, September is just an extension of summer in our neck of the woods.  One year I was blowing leaves in 90 degree heat.   In my mind there was something really wrong with that picture.

This year takes me back to my elementary school days, where the start of school meant sweaters in the mornings, and enjoying the warmth of the sun rather than longing for shade. With luck we'll have a long Autumn before the arrival of old man winter.

What are some of your favorite Fall activities?

  1. Today is cooler here as well and lends itself to feeling like Fall has arrived. I am quite enjoying it but realize that it will be hovering around 90 by the end of the week.

I love remembering the fall activities as a kid like burning the piles of leaves and carving pumpkins.

Now with our kids grown we tend to be more the spectators of some things. We go to the pumpkin patch and pick out our pumpkins so the grandkids can carve/paint them.

This time of year we usually attend the Renaissance Festival as well.

  3. Cheryl- We are having a lovely weekend here with temps in the 80s today. Our forecast is for for mostly 70s and low 80s during the day, and in the 50s overnight. Nice! We used to burn leaves when I was a kid. We were in the county then. Burning is not permitted in the city.

Hilary- Ha! I ususally have that thought in the dead of winter when the wind is cold and howling. You're right, though, there are a lot of great photo ops at this time of year. I guess the same is true for any season, though. There is beauty everywhere.

  4. Hi Linda,
You sound like you're in my neck of the woods where it's likely to stay around 90 until the middle of next month. Colors don't change and leaves don't fall. But when I lived in Atlanta my favorite fall activity was gaping at and taking pictures of the gorgeous fall landscape.

  6. Hi Linda .. this year because I haven't been out and about so much for 5+ years ... I'm looking forward to my long drive - some of which will be via country lanes with the beautiful autumnal colours. It it is sunny ... it will be glorious!!
