My Best Friends

Written for the 30-day creative writing challenge hosted by Nicky and Mike of We Work For Cheese.  Today's prompt is Best Friends.  This is the 8th day of this madness.  Check out the Linky at WWFC for more great stories.

There are many kinds of best friends, girlfriends, buddies, husbands and wives, even our pets.

My best friend for life was not always my best friend.  I was 10 when she was born, and no 10 year old is friends with a baby.  She lived next door, and during my teen years, she wanted to hang out with me, which, as you can guess, annoys a teenager.

When she was about 12, I came to see that she was smarter than most kids, not book smart, but smart in the ways of people.  She had an insight and intelligence beyond her years.  We soon developed a friendship that has lasted over 30 years, through college, marriage (both mine and hers) and many moves.

As I said in the beginning, there are different kinds of best friends.  Ashley is my best girlfriend, and I love her like a sister.  My husband is also my best friend.  We met on a blind date February 5, 1986 and have been best friends ever since.  Both of these are forever relationships.

On another note, not all best friends are human.  For the last 15 years I have shared my heart, my home, and usually my pillow with my cat, Rosie.  Anyone who reads here regularly knows Rosie from his picture, which I use as my avatar (he's just cuter than me).

  1. Very cool stuff. Having that closeness with someone for so many years is excellent. Good post!

  2. I've always wished I had a close friend like that. My friends over the years have drifted into and out of my life, sadly. I moved around a lot.

When people first started moving to other parts of the country, all sorts of people lost contact with one another. Until then most people stayed fairly close to their birth place, so long term friendships were easier.

  3. I have one very good friend who I've known for close to sixty years. She and I still talk at least once a week and meet at least once a month. I love it when that happens!

  4. Linda, one of my best friends in the world is 10 years old than me. We met the first day I started a job over 34 years ago and though we went on to different places, we've been friends ever since. My hubby is one, too, as our all my children. There are only so few people who you can share everything with...and my menagerie are right at the top of my best friends list. :) ((Thank heavens animals can't talk - lol))

  5. We have a cat. You may or may not know I nevertheless am not a big fan of cats. I do have to say though, having a cat as a best friend is a great idea. At least they can't talk back to you!

  6. You are a very lucky woman to have so many best friends! I always feel a bit sad for women who don't feel that their husbands are their best buds. Having your best friend by your side every day makes life more pleasant, doesn't it?

Rosie is such a cutie. Did you call Rosie "he"? Does Rosie know you gave him a girly, flowery name? :)

  7. P.J. - It is most excellent. My Mom had a friend like that for over 50 years. They worked together until she moved to NC. They still kept in touch every week by phone.

Babs- It is hard to form friendships when you have to move often. Ashley moved to Pennsylvania last year, so we don't see each other so much, but there's Facebook!

Linda- That is a lifelong friendship for sure.

Meleah - Don't I know it!! It would have been nice to mention all my good friends over the years, but that would take way too long. These are the lifers.

Talon- The lifelong friendships are truly wonderful. I have met so many people in recent years that I expect will be good friends for a very long time. I regret not mentioning my parents, as today would have been Mom's 87th birthday. They were indeed my best friends, too.

nonamedufus - Say what? Cats can't talk back? Maybe not English, but you should hear my Rosie. Hubby laughs at our "conversations". Oh and he goes off by himself and talks, and he talks to the other cats. I think he even taught Dood to talk.

  8. What a blessing, indeed. I've known my 2 best friends for nearly 30 years now, and I couldn't imagine life without them.

  9. Thanks BFF!

I still remember the soft grass under my bare feet and the warm summer sun of your backyard. I would play in the trickle of bubbly water as it made it's way down your drive when you washed your car.
    Good memories.

  10. Nicky- Best friends are those who love you for exactly who you are! I am blessed!

Ashley- Thank you for visiting today, and thank you for 30 years of good times, wonderful memories and most of all your friendship. I love you!
