Quote of the Week

As I was walking up the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today.
I wish, I wish he'd go away.

- Hugh Mearns

I have come across this one many times in my quest for quotes, and always passed it over because it didn't seem to fit.  But I like it so it is this week's quote.

What does it mean?

Some things that come to mind are, of course, ghosts, or figments of our imagination.  The thought that we are seeing people from our past, and talking to them as though they are real.  Or maybe it is an event that troubles us and causes us to see what isn't there.

On the other hand, it reminds me of a Dr. Seuss story I had on an old record when I was just a sprout.  It was much spookier back then.

The Pants With Nobody Inside Them

Most of you have read or listened to Dr. Suess?  What was your favorite tale?

  1. That's a fun little poem, Linda. It reminds me of a couple of things my grandfather used to say.

"I'm going out. If I should return during my absence, hold onto me until I get back."

    and

"Go home and tell your mother she wants you."

    :)

  2. Ok, I was going to say something and totally forgot when I read what Hilary's grandfather used to say. Those are awesome!

  3. My then-boyfriend, now-husband, gave me "Oh the Places You'll Go" when we were going through a rough time and while I have many I love, that one still speaks to me most.

  4. Hi Linda .. loved reading this again - a well known poem, as you say .. just fun .. but the video - the kids would love it - particularly the last second!

I have no idea what it means - but honestly some days I feel a blank!

Cheers and have a better than blank week .. Hilary

  5. I loved the poem, but like you said, I'm not sure what to make of it. My first thought was the projection of a man's evil side, but I imagine it's more playing with words.

Dr. Seuss was my favorite read for my children. I always liked reading aloud. Dr. Seuss made this so much fun:~) My favorite book was Green Eggs and Ham.

  6. Hilary- I love these. Your grandfather must have had a real sense of humor. My uncle had some odd sayings. "If a man's sick, he's not well, and everything he eats goes to his stomach." Who knows where that came from. Lots of good stuff from their generation.

    Nicky- They are awesome!

StarTraci- I hadn't heard that one. I looked it up on Youtube. Some really good advice in the guise of a children's book.

Hilary- Thanks. I hope this week is productive. I have those blank moments, and many times my posts are done on the fly. As for the quote, it is surely open to interpretation. The original story on my record was definitely spookier.

Sara- This was just one of those that I liked, maybe because it's a little odd. I did like Green Eggs and Ham, too.

  8. My Mom used to quote that little ditty and it always made me smile. I always loved Dr. Suess's "Green Eggs and Ham".
