Uncivil Conflict

Black and white
Blue and gray
A house divided
Falls into the fray

Red and white
Stripes of freedom
Pride of many
Rejected by some

Blue and gray
Many fall
A price to high
For one and all

Light turns to dark
Death and fear
Day upon day
Year after year

Blue and gray
Black and white
All remembered
Dark turns to light

  1. a rather chipper verse for such a subject...a house divided will indeed fall...

  2. Brian- Hmmm, chipper was definitely not what I was going for here. It is indeed a somber subject.

  3. Linda,

I liked this poem very much. The musical quality of using "Black and white/Blue and gray" in the beginning and end gave the poem balance.

I also thought the use of colors to accentuate the subject of this poem was well done. The title fit perfectly.

I enjoy rhyming poems because I like to read poetry aloud.

Most of all, it's so nice to see you writing like this again! Well done, my friend:~)

Great stanza due to the fact that the rejection is made more prominent by breaking with the established rhyme scheme. Very effective and telling.

  5. "Light turns to dark
    Death and fear
    Day upon day
Year after year" - so much truth here, Linda.

The juxtaposition of such a serious subject with a rhyme sequence makes it weightier.

dustus- Thanks. I'm glad you liked.

Talon- Thank you. It was a sad time in our history, and definitely heavy subject matter.

  7. The red and white stripes of freedom really made me think.

Glad the lights always gets in, as it does. The truth leads the way always, and the truth is always love.

  11. Hilary- Yes, we've had some dark moments in our history, as have most countries throughout time. I like the rhyming poems, too.

  12. Your poem, for me expressed the tragedy and the futility of war so well. When will we learn to negotiate a settlement BEFORE we shoot?

  13. Stafford- Not as long as both sides know they are right and won't compromise. It was a dark time in our history with much stubbornness on both sides.
