Written for the 30-day creative writing challenge hosted by Nicky and Mike of We Work For Cheese.  Today's prompt is Spiders.  It is now day 5; only 25 days left, to check out these great stories.

Ack, this is a really big spider!  Meet our house guest for the weekend.  He (or she) was a really good house guest (for the sake of the story we will assume it's a male).

We were visiting with friends for the weekend, and we had our choice of sleeping quarters, so we chose the accommodations at the top of the road because the A/C was supposed to be COLD, and with me being just short of volcanic, I figured that would be best.

In the main cabin we had dinner, drank wine and talked, as good friends do.  Our hostess's charming aunt and uncle, who lived nearby, joined us as we waited for the last couple to arrive.  The wine flowed, stories were told, and the evening wound down in anticipation of the next day's activities.

We walked back to the trailer, and shortly after getting settled in for the evening, we discovered our house guest.  Wow, that's a big spider (loud exclamation) and then "where's my camera".  Now I'm not afraid of spiders, but I would greatly prefer that they remain outside, and I will use lethal force against a home invasion of the eight-legged critters.  One this size, though, I prefer to just persuade to leave, and by that I mean have my husband remove him.  We grabbed a broom to entice him out the front door.  Alas, our attempts to evict him failed, as he skillfully evaded us under a bookcase or some other piece of furniture where we couldn't get to him.

This was probably the hottest weekend we could have possibly chose to get together.  Now that doesn't have anything to do with the spider who probably didn't care one way or another that we were there, and the trailer was now cool.

What, you ask, did we do now?  Well, I'll tell you.  Nothing!  We went down the hall and went to bed.  We never saw him again.  The funny thing was that a member of our group had an intense fear dislike of spiders, however, I couldn't resist showing our house guest's portrait the following morning.  Apparently everyone chose the appropriate sleeping quarters.

And now for everyone who hates spiders.

  1. I remember that song! I don't mind spiders that much, but there is no way I would've just gone to sleep- I would've had to kill that spider! ;)

  2. Ha, ha. I liked to the same song today. Can't say I'm as laid back about spiders as you are though. They give me the creeps.

  3. I've never heard the song before, and I don't think I've been missing much! Was that from Hee-haw?

I did enjoy the trailer story though.

  4. You don't say how large it was. No way I could have slept while that thing was loose!

  5. Well, at least the spider realized you guys might try and evict him again, so he just kind of did his own thing!

  6. Now that spider probably brought his own luggage along. They should charge him rent.

  7. OMFG!! That spider is HUGE! *shudders*

  8. I probably would not have slept at all...

  9. Jim's song took me back in time, Linda :)

Oh! That's a serious spider. I'm like you - if they're outside and doing their thing, I'm fine with that. Once they come inside, though, it's a whole different game :)

  10. Now that's what I'm talking about! Live and let live!

  11. While spiders normally don't bother me, I've got to admit, I'm not sure I could have roomed with that beast!

  12. That photo of the spider gave me shivers. I don't think the spider and I could have been roommates!

  13. AWESOME picture!!! I think I would have gone to bed too, actually. As long as he didn't have baby spiders crawling all over his back!

  14. That's the kind of spider that gives me nightmares. Dear God...

  15. life in the mom lane- It was either go to sleep (at the other end of the trailer) or stay up waiting for him to come out. I chose sleep. :)

nonamedufus- That song was the first thing to come to mind when I saw the prompt. As for spiders, I never said some of them don't creep me out, I just don't fear them. I could come up with some more spider tales, though.

notactuallygod - Jim Stafford also did "Wildwood Weed" and "My Girl Bill" among others. And he was, indeed, a guest on Hee-Haw.

Babs- He was probably a good 2 inches from end to end, but after we tried to chase him out with a broom, he probably had a different agenda, plus we were at the other end of the trailer.

    P.J. - That's what I'm thinking.

Leeuna- Probably. That makes me think of Stuart Little. :)

Meleah- Yeah, he was purty big!

laughingmom- Well, his presence did creep us out a bit, but I figured he'd stay put or try to find his own way out.

Talon- All the way back to 1974! Their survival rate is better if they stay outside.

Linda- Yeah, and they live longer when hubby deals with them. I don't whack the big ones - yuck.

Nicky - At least he was in the living area near the front door. The bedrooms were down the hall. I really don't think he had any interest in getting to know us better.

Malisa- While not the largest spider we've seen, he ranked right up there.

Katherine- Thanks for that visual from your post! I have got to say that might have changed the equation somewhat.

Mike- Hey, Katherine's looked just like mine (except for the zillion little spiders). I could have written about all the black widows I've found around here.

  16. I agree, I am not afraid of spiders but I definitely prefer that they stay outside. There are many spiders outside on my balcony this time of year and of course some find their way inside sometimes. In fact, I have laid on the couch and felt something tickle me and when I have checked it has been a actually spider. Now THAT is NOT fun! Lol! But they are pretty harmless though.

Sounds like you had a great time by the way, with your house guest and all. ;)

  17. Alexandra- Oh, I definitely don't want them walking on me. It doesn't matter that I'm not afraid, I will still scream. Ugh.
