So I Thought I Could Dance?

Written for the 30-day creative writing challenge hosted by Nicky and Mike of We Work For Cheese.  Today's prompt is They played my song.

The night they played my song!  Or better yet, the night I embarrassed myself by turning into Disco Duck.   We were at a friend's wedding reception.  You know the fancy kind at the country club with an open bar and a dance floor...need I say more?  I do?  OK, the kind where the bride's father just smiles and empties his wallet, and then when asked about the reception, just turns his pockets inside out.  Yeah, that kind.

We knew a small handful of people there, but with the open bar, were enjoying ourselves.  Finally, I got hubby to join me on the dance floor.  I don't remember what was playing at first.  It didn't matter. It was a chance to dance, and, social occasions being few and far between, I liked to take full advantage.

I expect the first few dances were the slow kind were you just kind of hug around in a circle on the dance floor, trying not to step on each others' feet.

And then, all of a sudden as if by magic, or as if they could read my mind...wait for it...

Stayin' Alive from Saturday Night Fever.  At the first note there was instant recognition, my eyes lit up, I grinned, and my feet took on a life of their own.  Everyone else disappeared.  It was just me and the music.  I no longer cared what anyone thought, or how ridiculous I must look.  I had to dance.  I had the moves.  I was in the groove.

Sadly, the night was nearly at it's end, and the party was winding down.  I remember thinking it was cruel to play that at the end of the evening when I was just getting started.

As we made our way to the car, my feet, that were happily ready to dance the night away, now without the pull of the music, were sore and aching.  So much for Disco Duck.

We made some good memories, and I still love to dance when I get the chance.

This is what you get when I write at 1:30 a.m.

  1. Disco absolutely is the best wedding reception music.

I remember 15 years ago when my wife and I got married, we had the DJ play it almost exclusively...so much fun.

  2. Disco. Yuck. When my wife and I got married 7 years ago the DJ, obviously not clear on the concept, played "Please Release Me" as we danced our first dance. Of all the songs out there, that has become our song. Thank God we both have a sense of humour.

  3. LOVE IT! For me, at a party like that, it would be "Dancing Queen." Which unfortunately they played at a work Christmas party years ago. I still cringe when I think of it. WHY did I go on that dance floor!

  4. This kind of music is definitely good at a wedding. Catchy and easy for people to get their groove on to as well as be able to sing it together. And what a beat. Totally a head-bobbing tune!

  5. Sounds like you put a little life into that reception!

  6. I think it's awesome that you could totally submerse yourself in the music like that. That's what's supposed to happen! Great story, Linda, even if it was written in the wee hours... because you were out dancing? :-)

  7. Unfinished Person- I totally agree. I think Disco is something you either love or hate. I love it!

nonamedufus- Your DJ definitely had some problems. I am glad you were able to just roll with it. Humor is an essential relationship tool.

Katherine- Dancing is such fun. That is why I (and you) were out there. I love Abba, too.

P.J. - It's great. You can dance to it, sing along with it, and just feel good all around.

laughingmom- Well, at least it put a little life into me.

Nicky- It was fun indeed, but last night was a late evening at a friend's house (also fun). This wedding was about 15 years ago, or 20 years after the song was first popular.

  8. This song still makes me want to get up and dance. Fortunately, my only audience is my Chihuahua. Hey -- good for you!

  9. I think that song will always have that effect on people. How can you not dance when it comes on?

  11. People still respond and turn out for the clarion call of that song. It's usually older women dancing with each other, but I don't let that stop me. If I'm the only guy out there, SO BE IT! I'm there to have fun and that song is it.

  12. Hah, brilliant! I'll make a point of asking the band to play a little disco at my wedding, I cannot wait to see people dance with abandon. ;)

  13. Sounds like you had a blast. It would have been fun to see. This, as it turns out is a fine tribute to recently-departed Robin Gibb.

Babs- Yes, no matter how silly we look.

Linda- I do love disco, great dancing music.

notactuallygod- I'm with you on that!

Ziva- We'll be waiting for the video. ;)

Hilary- It was a blast. I loved the BeeGees. I guess Barry is the only one left.

    Meleah- Disco does rule!!!
