Breaking the Rules

Written for the 30-day creative writing challenge hosted by Nicky and Mike of We Work For Cheese.  This is day 29, and the next to the last day of this incredible writing challenge and those who are still standing will be weighing in with today's prompt is breaking the rules.  Check out the Linky at WWFC to see who's breaking the rules.

I've never been much of a rule breaker - too afraid of getting in trouble I guess.  I did break the rules once in kindergarten but I've already confessed that in "Black Eyes and Tutus".  I learned early on what can happen when you break the rules.

Rules are made, rules are broken, and somehow life goes on and more rules are made.

I leave you now with a few quotes on what other people think about rules.

Rules are not necessarily sacred, principles are.
- Franklin D. Roosevelt

The young man knows the rules, but the old man knows the exceptions.
- Oliver Wendell Holmes

You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.
- Richard Branson

Principles and rules are intended to provide a thinking man with a frame of reference.
- Karl Von Clausewitz

No tendency is quite so strong in human nature as the desire to lay down rules of conduct for other people.
- William Howard Taft

I had these recipes that say do this, do that. Who MAKES these rules?
- Emeril Lagasse

There are no rules. That is how art is born, how breakthroughs happen. Go against the rules or ignore the rules. That is what invention is about.
- Helen Frankenthaler

  1. I was never much of a rule breaker either. I think sometimes this is misinterpreted as being dull.

I love reading quotes. I don't think I had ever seen any of those.

Very clever post for the prompt.

  2. Rules can be like a box...limiting. I know the saying's been over-used but we have to think outside of the box sometimes.

  3. I didn't break rules either, but once I was an adult, I learned to do things my way. Usually never the way you were 'supposed' to do them, but it was my way :)

  4. I've broken rules all my life, but seldom broken the law. There were two exceptions.

  5. I love the Helen Frankenthaler rule, especially when doing some form of art.

  6. While I love all of those quotes, Emeril's strikes home the most. I couldn't follow a recipe to save my life!

  7. It depends on who makes the rules. I'd be willing to follow or break them, depending where they come from. ;)

  8. Rules, schmules. Well-behaved people rarely make history...

  9. Cheryl- I hadn't seen these either. I just googled breaking the rules and up popped breaking the rules quotes, and I said that'll do.

nonamedufus- Overused or not, it's the truth. Also seeing the bigger picture. Some rules are helpful and for our benefit, others are restrictive.

Babs- Like old blue eyes said "I did it my way!" Works for me. ;)

Linda- By now I have read those exceptions. That's a better track record that lot's of people, but I know those incidents bother you a lot.

P.J.- Art is a definite exception to the rules!

Nicky- I figured you'd like that one!

Hilary- It does depend on the rules, who made them and for what reason.

I Wonder Wye- I highly suspect this is true. Thank you for stopping by.

  10. I've got to find that Erma Bombeck quote.

    Here are two:

“People shop for a bathing suit with more care than they do a husband or wife. The rules are the same. Look for something you'll feel comfortable wearing. Allow for room to grow.”

This has nothing to do with rules but I loved it.

“Never go to a doctor whose office plants have died.”
