Quote of the Week

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came,—
The Ashes, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The sunshine spread a carpet,
And every thing was grand;
Miss Weather led the dancing;
Professor Wind, the band....
The sight was like a rainbow
New-fallen from the sky....
- George Cooper, "October’s Party"

In our part of the country, October is a beautiful month, often warm with breezes that tickle the leaves from the trees.

What is October like where you live?

  1. Just beautiful. It's difficult to tell where the green ends and the gold begins. So "the sight was like a rainbow" is quite apt.

  2. I want your October. How beautiful. Here in California we're suffering through 90+ degree days.

  3. Our October's tend to be on the cooler side, but usually with lots of sunshine and that particular shade of blue sky you only get at this time of year. And the bonus is the stunning color as the leaves change. Unfortunately, the weather has been high winds and lots of rain...not our usual October at all. Still, it's my favorite month. :) Love the photo, Linda!

  4. Hilary, there are some unintentional "special effects" in this photo. It was taken through the car window, and part of the trees are seen through the tint at the top of the windshield. It did make a pretty picture, though.

    Jayne, this is just an optical illusion. Although we had a few cool days, today's temp is in the mid 80s, so it's not time for sweaters and hot chocolate just yet.

    Talon, welcome back. The blog has had a makeover while you've been away. I hope you had a pleasant and relaxing summer. Sorry about the wind and rain you're having. That doesn't do a lot for the foliage. Like you said, October is still a great time of year.

  5. We still look like summer where I'm at. I have ONE red leaf in my dogwood tree, but it has been cooler, which is nice. I love fall. I agree with Talon's comment about the sky. With our lower humidity, I'm starting to see Talon's skies even here. I walk outside and just stare up at the wispy clouds and wonder how to describe the blue of the sky.

    p.s. That is a very nice photo!

  6. Our dogwood is mostly green with hints of red and yellow. The berries are all red, and the buds are set for next year. I know what you mean about the sky. You can often tell the season just by looking at the clouds. I expect to still see big puffy billowing clouds at the beach.
