Going Green?

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day, or St. Paddy's Day as many call it.  It is a day of celebration, drinking, feasting, and coloring things green...water, beer, etc.  Digging into the archives, here is a post I wrote last year to take a deeper look at St. Patrick's Day, who St. Patrick was, and why we celebrate his life.

While it will be a day filled with festivities and celebration among those of Irish descent, and those who just like any excuse to party, for Japan it is a different story.  In the wake of the massive earthquake and ensuing tsunami, many have lost loved ones, are homeless, cold, hungry and scared.

So, while we celebrate with our friends and families, let's stop for a moment and consider the suffering of our fellow humans.

On a lighter note, anyone having or going to a party?

If you wish to help, there are a number of ways to donate such as through the Red Cross, and Second Harvest Japan, a food bank.  However, if you choose to donate, please select your charitable organization carefully.  Tragedy not only brings out those willing to help, but the unscrupulous as well.

Not necessarily, but I am going to drink green beer at my favorite country club!

  3. I'm like Talon. I totally forgot. I'll have to find that old green shirt I wear. I don't particularly like getting pinched...I wonder where the history of pinching people on St. Patrick's Day came from?

  4. I have no party planned to attend. I suppose I could celebrate. And probably should! My pal Kalyani is taking a big massage test today. I think I will take her out tomorrow for fun and frolic.

Blue Bunny is already in the spirit -- I must follow suit!! :)

It is terrible about Japan, yes. Really makes us realize how lucky we are. And the good we can do, however small our offering.

  5. Talon- Quick, find something green. ;)

meleah rebeccah- Not sure I'd like green beer. I mean it's just food coloring, but...anyway, drink one for me.

Sara- I'll be donning something green as well, instead of the usual white T-shirt I wear to the Y. Oh, and the pinching thing...I should try to find a different color for my links.

"The pinching is actually an American tradition started in the early 1700s, and is not related to either St. Patrick or Ireland. At the same time that St. Patrick's Day became widely celebrated, it was also thought that wearing green made one invisible to Leprechauns. This was good because the Leprechauns would pinch everyone they could see. Pinching, therefore, became a warning and reminder to watch out for Leprechauns."

Jannie- No party here either, but I do love all the green that shows up at this time of year. 'Cept maybe the green beer. Oh, did Blue Bunny turn green?

  6. I did make corned beef and cabbage today and then after a while I forgot about it but wondered why the dog has such bad gas. Other than that I didn't do anything for the 'holiday'.
