Lightly Falling Snow

White Christmas 2010

Lightly falling snow

Dusts the ground like

Powdered sugar doughnuts

Leaving sweet traces

On little faces

Wrapped up in pretty colors

Bright blue mittens

And shiny red boots

Children's happy cries

And their mother's sighs

Remembering the days long ago

Of lightly falling snow

This was our White Christmas.  It began snowing at 11:15 Christmas morning.  We had 6 inches on the ground the morning after Christmas.  What a beautiful Christmas present.

A Winter's Day

Snow covered pines bend low
Softly whispering their secrets
The icy carpet beneath
Bears the tracks of birds and squirrels
Scurrying frantically hither and yon
Seeking sustenance and shelter
Against the bitter cold
Hunkering down until the sun
Shall warm away winter's evidence
And return to them nature's bounty
That they may feast once more

Shades of Summer

Although it is the first day of Autumn, and Summer has officially drawn to a close, we are still feeling the heat from another 90-degree day.  It seems Autumn is just another word in our neck of the woods today. 

Basking in the summer sun

Watching butterflies one by one

Flitting here and alighting there

Of my presence unaware

Beneath the yellow poplar tree

Here I sit, myself and me

The sky above is clear and blue

Nary a trace of morning dew

Though the sun bears summer’s heat

With pavement hot upon my feet

The dappled shade brings signs of fall

Clearly heard in the crickets’ call

The Lock and the Key

Said the lock to the key

Will you marry me

We'll live forever more

Here upon this weathered door

It's charming and quaint

With it's peeling paint

A Storm in the Night

Slowly into the night

Silently advancing

Unknown and undetected

Trembling now, but

It's approach is like

A zephyr

Gently caressing

Suddenly without warning

Power without measure

Gloriously unleashed

Pounds down upon the land

Her terrifying fury

Splashes the earth, then

As quickly as it came

Retreats slowly into the night

This was poem written quite some time ago, but I thought it matched the fierceness of the sky in this picture.  That light colored cloud was moving very fast.

Dry and crinkled with age

Swirling down

to dance across the lawn

like tiny ballerinas

A Limerick Is Born!

It was late and I had called it a night shortly after midnight.  The lights were out, my DH was in the reading room and Rosie had settled down on my pillow.  As I lay there awaiting the sandman, a series of words kept going through my head.  They strung together with other words and started rhyming.  As they came together, I knew I had to get a pen and paper and write it down.  After Hubs read it, I remarked that it sounded something like a limerick.  He said "I think it is".

Now I've read limericks for years, but didn't know what made them "limericks", so I looked it up, and apparently I'd written one.

There once was a girl from Magoo

Who got stuck on a big spot of glue

She squirmed and she wiggled

'Til everyone giggled

And bid her get rid of the shoe
