Moving Day

Amber sat down hard upon the steps, still hot from the afternoon sun. She thrust her chin into her hand, trying hard not to cry. Callie was leaving tomorrow. It was totally unfair. Her lower lip trembled as the tears started to fall. At ten the whole world ends when your best friend moves away.

Written for Friday Flash 55.

  1. Nicely done, Linda! I think the only thing worse than having your best friend move is being the one to move :-(

  4. You are rippin' my heart out...

My parents still live in the same house I grew up in... I can still walk into my old bedroom (it is A LOT cleaner)

But, my husband and I have moved many times, and my heart BREAKS when I see my kids faces as we drive from our hometowns... Petoskey, MI was a really sad move away... my kids still go back every summer and we still think of it as our "home". Thank God for FB!

A perfect capture of despair in 55 words.

  5. Linda...
Sorry about the sad inspiration for this Most Excellent 55!
That gives you an excuse for a vacation, unless of course your friend is moving to some Ohio location, then this will be even worse.
Thanks for playing, and have a Kick Ass Week-End

  6. I remember this from the other direction, as I was the one who moved at twelve from the only neighborhood I'd known, leaving all my friends behind. Melancholy 55.

  10. Nicky- I am fortunate not to have moved away from anyone. My best friends moved to PA this Spring, hence the trip to Philly and Ephrata. I really miss them.

MorningAJ- Tis a good thing it's fiction. :)

    Babs- Thanks!

Anji- Sorry, It's hard to see your friends move away.

    Brian- Thank you!

Margaret- Thank you! I've moved several times but never left my home town.

G-Man- It is fictional, but I know what it's like to have friends move away.

Eric- All my moves were within my home town so I haven't left anyone.

    Morning- Thank you!

    Doctor- FTSE- Thank you!

Meleah- I'm sorry you had to go through that. I know it's hard. Kids are more reslilient than us older folks.

    Mama Zen- Indeed it is.

  13. When you're young and your best friend leaves...oh, that hurts. I remember when I was about eleven, a friend of mine moved. Even though I still saw her a lot, it wasn't quite the same as when we could walk to our houses.

You do such as good job of writing a short short short story. That's very hard to do and do well, but you do it:~)
